Great Yarmouth Charter Academy hosted an exciting workshop led by renowned musician and educator Carl Cole. As part of the Out There Arts initiative, funded by NRThirty, Carl has worked with every year group during lunch breaks and after school sessions this week. This initiative aims to provide young people in the area with opportunities to grow and develop their talents and skills, culminating in their participation in Great Yarmouth's annual 'Out There Festival'.

Carl Cole, a multi-instrumentalist and sound artist based near Norwich, lead a workshop titled "Beats, Music & Soundscapes". The session explored the creation of music using traditional instruments, exotic world instruments like the sitar and sarangi, and even unconventional objects such as giant springs and dynamo torches.

Carl Cole shared his enthusiasm for the workshop, stating,

"I love exploring the hidden worlds of sound with young people. It's amazing to see their creativity flourish when they experiment with different instruments and technology."

Charter Academy pupils are equally excited about the opportunity. One student, Eduard, expressed his anticipation, saying, "I can't wait to try out all the different instruments and see what kind of sounds we can create. It's going to be so much fun!"

Sean Powell, Senior Vice Principal at Charter Academy, highlighted the importance of such initiatives for the local community.

"The impact of the arts and media on young people's interests and ambitions is profound. Programs like this not only nurture their creativity but also provide them with valuable skills and experiences that can shape their future."

Every Wednesday, Charter Academy pupils stay after school to learn new skills and find new hobbies. This week's workshop promises to be a unique and enriching experience, allowing students to delve into the world of soundscapes and digital media.

The Out There Festival, held annually in Great Yarmouth, is a vibrant celebration of arts and culture. Regularly attracting more than 60,000 people, the festival is known for its exceptional, innovative, and diverse program. It features a mix of breathtaking spectacles, quirky comedy, and quality performances, all set against the backdrop of Great Yarmouth's scenic locations, from St George’s Park to the golden seafront.

Local arts organisations can play a crucial role in supporting the academy by working with young people each Wednesday from 4pm. These organisations can offer workshops, provide access to unique artistic resources, and connect students with professional artists. By partnering with Charter Academy, local arts groups can help restore and enhance arts education, offering students opportunities to engage with the arts in meaningful ways.

With Carl Cole's guidance, the students of Charter Academy are set to embark on a musical journey that will inspire and empower them, fostering a deeper appreciation for the arts and their potential to transform lives. The Out There Festival in June provides a perfect platform for these young talents to showcase their newfound skills and creativity to a wider audience.
