Pupils at Great Yarmouth Charter Academy have been recognised for their efforts in learning first aid and CPR techniques, thanks to a series of lunchtime events featuring CPR dolls.

Over the course of ‘Restart Your Heart’ Day providing an ideal opportunity for individuals and groups to learn and practice CPR techniques and life-saving skills, all pupils in Year 7 to Year 11 were given the opportunity to work with Alice Gray, a volunteer from St. John's Ambulance, and Geography teacher here at the academy, to learn how to conduct CPR on a Resusci Anne doll. The doll is a medical simulator that is widely used to teach emergency workers and members of the general public how to perform resuscitation.

During the events, the pupils were shown and demonstrated how to do compressions and improve oxygen regulation within the dummies, as well as how to resuscitate using the equipment. Many pupils enjoyed learning how to hold the dolls and how to make sure their hands were in the right places, while some even enjoyed the competition of trying to improve oxygen intake.

As a result of their efforts, many pupils were awarded certificates recognising their newfound skills and knowledge.

The lunchtime events were a great success as more and more pupils were able to conduct CPR under the volunteering and assistance of a St. John's Ambulance volunteer. Every pupil who participated in the event could watch and observe their peers as they learned how to perform CPR, and the celebration was palpable as each participant was awarded their certificate as they demonstrated their life-saving skills in front of the whole school.

Nicholas Pavel, one of a dozen of Year 7 pupil’s receiving their certificate said,

"I feel really proud to have learned how to do CPR today. It's amazing to think that I could help save someone's life if they were in trouble. I'm excited to show my parents and friends what I learned and encourage them to learn too."

Claire Gregson-Rix, Vice Principal overseeing Pastoral and Community Engagement said,

“Learning CPR is an essential skill that can save lives, and it's great to see so many pupils at this school taking the initiative to learn these skills. With the help of volunteers like Alice Gray and the use of Resusci Anne dolls, pupils can become more confident in performing CPR in real-life emergency situations. It's heartening to see young people taking such an active interest in their own health and wellbeing, and we hope that this trend continues to spread throughout the wider community.”
