Great Yarmouth Charter Academy has hosted its first-ever chess tournament, aiming to find the most skilled players in each of its four houses, Sayer, MacMillan, Lewis and Bentley. The event was held in the school's Helsdon Hall and was attended by over 40 pupils and staff. The tournament was organised by the school's chess club, and the club's members were responsible for managing the competition.

After a long day of intense matches, the winner of the tournament was announced. Orestas R, a year 9 student from McMillan House, was crowned Chess Champion for the Autumn Term. Orestas's exceptional performance throughout the tournament earned him the title, and he emerged as a clear winner.

The tournament was not just about finding the best chess player in the school, but also about promoting the game and spreading awareness about its benefits. Chess is known to improve cognitive skills, enhance memory, and develop strategic thinking. Mr James, the coordinator of the club believes that by organising events like this, they can encourage more students to take up the game and reap its benefits.

Mr James said "We are thrilled to have hosted this chess tournament and it was wonderful to see so many students taking part and displaying their skills. Our aim is to test and find the best players in the school and prepare them to compete at a national level. The tournament was just the beginning, and we plan to create a chess program that will include regular training sessions and competitions to help students hone their skills and compete at higher levels."

The school’s Head of Year 9 praised the overall winner. Madame Peak congratulated Orestas and praised the organisers for putting together such a successful event. She said:

"We are proud of Orestas and all the participants who showed great sportsmanship and skills throughout the tournament. This event was a great initiative by the chess club, and we hope to see more such events in the future."

The tournament was just the beginning of Great Yarmouth Charter Academy’s plan to promote the game of chess. The school is now planning to create a chess program that will include regular training sessions and trust-wide competitions to help students hone their skills and compete at higher levels. With its first-ever chess tournament being a huge success, the school hopes to see more students take an interest in the game and become accomplished players.
